Smile Mark Players Presents...
![]() |
their 2nd live performance "Colonel Parker & the Incredibles", June 20th, in Zion, IL.
In 2006 NorthPointe joined alliance with Doug McDade, a professional actor and Managing Artistic Director at the Gurnee Theatre Company (GTC) to help us fulfill one of our strategic goals—to provide opportunities for expression and personal fulfillment to adults with disabilities—while helping GTC fulfill its mission to develop the skills and talents of all members of its community.
"This is an extraordinary opportunity to give a particular group of people an artistic voice the general public on a whole doesn't know they have", says Doug McDade. "They've got a lot to show me. It's going to be a wonderful education for all."
Together, McDade's and NorthPointe’s curriculum includes discovery exercises; vocal exercises, movement, and helping the performers learn to work together. The curriculum is similar to GTC's OnStage Academy curriculum for school-aged children, which helps children creatively express themselves and develop confidence for performance as well as for life.
The individuals of the theatre workshop chose their own theatre name—Smile Mark Players—and the goal of the new program was to ultimately produce a performance featuring participants from the theatre workshop. We are happy to announce that last October the Smile Mark Players reached their goal and held their first public performance, Having a Starlight Blast which was a great success and received outstanding reviews from everyone that attended the show.
The theatre group is now in the development stage of their second performance
"Colonel Parker & the Incredibles"; a review of entertainment with skits, song and lots of fun!
